Boundary conditions
Noun & adjective
Shows a region where a differential equation exists and the values associated with the boundary conditions.
Example: Single-row and double-row cylindrical roller bearings were used to support the shafts at the two ends depending on the BOUNDARY CONDITIONS.

Emissivity
Noun
It is the proportion of thermal radiation emitted by a surface or object due to its temperature.
Example: The emissivity coefficient (ε) is a dimensionless number that relates the ability of a real object to radiate thermal energy.

Energy balance
Noun
An energy balance is an accounting of the contributions and energy consumption by a system to be studied. It is about knowing the changes in the energy level of a system.
Example: Weight gain increases leptin levels and induces a different response, leading to a state of negative ENERGY BALANCE.

Heat Conduction
Noun
It is a process of heat transmission based on direct contact between bodies, without matter exchange, because heat flows from a higher temperature body to a lower temperature body that is in contact with the first.
Example: HEAT CONDUCTION is very low in ultra-high vacuum space and is zero in ideal empty space, space without energy.

Heat flux
Noun
Heat flow is the measure of energy transfer, which is caused by a temperature difference and leads to temperature equilibrium between substances.
Example: These values are used to calculate the latent HEAT FLUX density using the surface energy balance equation.

Heat generation
Noun
It is the transformation of some form of energy into thermal energy, be it electrical by resistance of wire, exothermic chemistry or nuclear in nuclear fuel rods.
Example: HEAT GENERATION is expressed per unit volume, its units are W/m^3

Insulation
Noun
It is the set of materials and installation techniques that are applied in the construction elements that separate a heated space from the outside or from other spaces to reduce the transmission of heat between them.
Example: Airlocks limit the loss of steam and further heat loss by radiation is minimised by appropriate INSULATION.

Internal energy
Noun
Internal energy is defined as the energy associated with the random and disorderly motion of molecules.
Example: The change in INTERNAL ENERGY (U) of the system is equal to the heat added (Q).

One-dimensional heat transfer
Adjective
It is one-dimensional if the temperature in the medium varies in only one direction and, therefore, heat is transferred in that same direction; at the same time, the temperature variation and consequently the heat transfer in other directions is negligible or zero.
Example: Heat conduction in a medium is said to be one-dimensional when conduction is significant in one dimension only and negligible in the other two dimensions.

Specific temperature
Noun
It is a physical quantity that is defined as the amount of heat that must be supplied to the unit mass of a substance or thermodynamic system to raise its temperature by one unit; this is measured on several scales.
Example: SPECIFIC TEMPERATURE (also called specific heat capacity or specific heat capacity)

Thermal conductivity
Noun & adjective
It is a physical property of materials that measures heat conduction capacity.
Example: The THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY and thickness of the material determine the rate of heat penetration.

Thermal diffusivity
Adjective
It is the value obtained by dividing the thermal conductivity of a certain material divided by the product of the value of its density and its specific heat capacity.
Example: THERMAL DIFFUSIVITY is also a parameter that indicates the relationship between the conduction of the material with respect to the heat it stores.

Thermal symmetry
Noun & adjective
It occurs as a result of symmetry in imposed thermal conditions. Where it does not present heat flux in the central plane if not to the closest point of the surface.
Example: In the case of cylindrical or spherical bodies, it indicates that it has THERMAL SYMMETRY with respect to the center line, so the derivative of the temperature with respect to r will be zero at the center line.

Three-dimensional heat transfer
Adjective
It is three-dimensional when the temperature varies along the three primary directions within the medium during the heat transfer process.
Example: Three-dimensional when conduction in all dimensions is significant.

Two-dimensional heat transfer
Adjective
It is two-dimensional when the temperature in a medium varies mainly in two primary directions and the temperature variation in the third direction is negligible.
Example: It is said to be two-dimensional when conduction in the third dimension is negligible.
